Chana dal for Dal Pakwan

Dal pakwan is a Sindhi dish but popular all over India now because of its yummy taste. You would love to have it in breakfast. Let’s see how to make it.

List 1 :

Chana dal (Bengal gram dal)      1 cup *wash and soak dal for 3-4 hours.

Cinnamon          2 small pieces

Clove                  2

Asafoetida         ¼ tsp

Turmeric           ½ tsp

Spice powders :

Red chilli           1 tsp

Amchur             ½ tsp (Dry mango powder)

Sugar                 ½ tsp (optional)

Salt                     as required 

Tempering :

Ghee/oil            2 Tbsp

Cumin seeds     1 tsp

Green chilli       2 (cut into small pieces)

For garnish :

Onion (1 big) cut into small pieces

Few Coriander leaves (chopped finely)


  1. Pressure cook all the ingredients of ‘List 1’ with 2 cups of Water. (take 3-4 whistles on low flame)
  2. Mash a little.
  3. Add all the ‘Spice powders’.
  4. Check for consistency. (add more water if required)
  5. Cook for 4-5 minutes.
  1. Heat ghee/oil in a fry pan.
  2. Crackle cumin seeds.
  3. Fry green chillies.
  4. Pour it over dal.
  5. Garnish with onion and coriander leaves before serving.
  6. Enjoy dal pakwan with onions.
